ASSOC OF LEVEE BOARDS OF LA (ALBL)

The South Lafourche Levee District closes the floodgates to stop flooding, but it also affects navigation. During the fall and the spring, weather systems increase water elevation in Bayou Lafourche that force the closing of the floodgate even when there is no hurricane.

This situation is not good for the fishing, boating, and barge industries in our region. It also affects Port Fourchon’s access to traffic from the Intracoastal Canal. To solve most of these problems, the South Lafourche Levee District has converted the Leon Theriot Floodgate into a Lock.  We are now able to allow traffic through at practically all times except during a hurricane event.

We have recently elevated the south gates of the lock to bring it up to the new levee heights.
